Freelance Writing Career: Launch the Career You Want Today  by Angela Booth
Would a freelance writing career work for you? Perhaps you’re tired of office politics, or are worried about job security… or maybe you just want to work from home.
Although you’d love to do it, you hesitate. “Too risky,” you think.
Consider this. While few people remained unscathed during the global financial crisis, freelance writers have seen their incomes rise. Companies downsized, and freelancers got more work. These days, a freelance career may well be more secure than an ordinary job.
You have endless opportunities as a Freelance Writer, and you can launch the career you want today.
Here’s how to get started.
1. Visit the Outsourcing Sites to See What’s in Demand
I’ve just visited one of these sites, and here’s what I found: over 300 article writing jobs, almost 200 Web Content Writing jobs, and over 100 ebook writing jobs. That’s just on one site.
Check out the project listings on a couple of these sites. Could you see yourself winning these jobs?
A whole world of writing jobs exists outside these sites, but browsing the listings will give you an idea of what’s in demand, and what you could write.
Consider a few simple article writing jobs first. When you’ve completed these jobs, you’ll have feedback on the outsourcing site you chose, and you’ll find it easier to get projects.
Completing a short projects also gives you valuable experience.
I tell my writing students to that on these sites you’re paid to learn. You’ll learn how to work online, what sells, and also what needs people have.
2. Get Clients: They’re Looking for You
Of course, there are worlds of opportunities beyond the outsourcing sites.
Advertise your services. You can advertise for free on classifieds sites like Craigslist, and on forums, as well as on your own free blog.
3. Set Goals, and Create a Daily Writing Schedule
As a freelancer, you have freedom, but that freedom can be a danger. You’re your own boss. You need to set goals, and create a daily writing schedule, which you follow.
You don’t need to work office hours. Indeed, you can write from midnight to dawn if you wish, but your writing tasks must be completed.
Create a routine. During your writing hours, you must write. All professional writers have a routine. Some work early in the morning, before the household is awake, and then in the afternoon. Others keep office hours.
As a freelance writer, you’re a business person, so in addition to your writing, you need to find time to do housekeeping chores.
Routines always help. For example, make it routine to send out an invoice with a final draft.
There’s never been a better time to be a freelance writer. If you love to write, your success is assured.
